On The Road is dedicated to ensuring safe community mobility. We provide comprehensive driving assessments to help individuals, and their families assess their fitness to drive safely. Our OT driving rehab specialists tailor evaluations to meet the needs of each client and ensure confident decision-making surrounding driving.
A driving assessment may be required if you or a loved one exhibits various symptoms:
Driving Assessment Step 1: Clinical Tests
We begin our approach with clinical in-home exams to evaluate the functions above to ensure a thorough assessment of capabilities related to driving. An Occupational Therapist will come to your home to test your vision, sensation, physical strength, reaction time, balance, and your cognition - all vital components relating to driving. These tests help us to know if you are ready and able to be in the driver’s seat.
Driving Assessment Step 2: On-The-Road Evaluation
Following the completion of clinical testing, an OT Driver Rehab Specialist will ride with you in our rehabilitation vehicle to conduct a behind-the-wheel evaluation. This gives you the chance to drive through your community where you are most familiar and demonstrate your driving abilities.
Driving Assessment Step 3: Outcomes Discussion
After completing a clinical and behind the wheel evaluation, we will have a conversation with you, your support person, and/or your referring doctor. This conversation aims to shed light on your current driving skills and identify any necessary next steps which may include:
The adaptive equipment available to you can be overwhelming and you may not even be sure what you need.
When you work with Lindsey at On The Road, you will get recommendations for the adaptive equipment you need. You will be able to try the tools to discover what works best for you. Lindsey will help you navigate your state licensing and write the prescription for the specific equipment you need to purchase.
Lindsey will connect you with a vendor that can install the recommended equipment. She will communicate with the Department of Public Safety in your state of residence to update your license.
Once you have your equipment, Lindsey will perform a final check-out to make sure it works as it should and that you are satisfied with the installation.
Lindsey is not selling the equipment to you, rather, she is there helping you find the right equipment for your specific needs.
